Tatooine Sand Watches Will Help Save the Lars Homestead

By Andrew Liszewski
So here’s the backstory. Since traveling to a far-off planet to location shoot the Tatooine scenes from the original Star Wars film would have been cost-prohibitive, the filmmakers built and shot the sets in Tunisia instead. Including the Lars’ family home, commonly known as the ‘igloo’. Unfortunately the conditions and temperatures in the Tunisian desert have slowly weathered those sets over time, to the point where they’re close to being completely destroyed. So a group of fans has planned an expedition to Tunisia to restore them to their original glory, but in order to do that they need money. And as Lucasfilm has proved time and time again, the best way to get money is with Star Wars merchandise.
Taking a page from the Romain Jerome design playbook, the restoration team has created a collectible watch that features actual sand from the Tatooine sets adorning the face. The numbers surrounding the watch face are printed in Aurebesh, the official language of the Star Wars universe, and each timepiece is made from solid 316L stainless steel, machined brass and Seiko mechanisms. According to their Kickstarter page the watch has a suggested retail price of $112, and you can get one with a donation of just $77. However, it looks like the project has already reached their $22,760 funding goal. So not only will the sets hopefully be preserved, but they’ll have a few extra credits to head into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters too.

Casio G-Shock GD-100 Is Easily The Brightest Kid In Its Class

By Andrew Liszewski
Waaaay back in 1992 Timex introduced their first Ironman watch with electroluminescent Indiglo backlighting and the world of watch face illumination has never looked back. But even though it provides ample illumination for an LCD display (and perfectly stealthy illumination for use in a dark theater) I guess Casio figures there’s finally room for improvement. So their new G-Shock GD-100 models, which will be available at the end of September, feature a new LED backlighting system that’s 6 times brighter than your standard LED. Now I’m not sure who needs a watch that bright since the iPhone 4 has already taken over flashlight duties for a lot of us, but since the G-Shock line seems designed to handle any situation, I guess it’s nice to know it’s there.

Best Of Machine And Digital
The Mechanized Digital Watch features a digital font but manipulates it to function as a “mechanized” number because the elements of each digit physically move to create numbers. Every digit is composed of 7 panels and to create a number, panels on the watch face recess revealing contrasting sidewalls. Thus creating the outline of a digit and a whole lot of fun!

Fossil Palindrome Too By Philippe Starck

By Andrew Liszewski
If an overly complicated pilot’s watch isn’t your thing, you might be interested in the Palindrome Too designed by Philippe Starck for Fossil, which is pretty much the exact opposite. Sure, including a single analog watch face would have made the design even simpler, but then you wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on the clock in two different time zones now would you? It’s also got a stainless steel case and a black polyurethane strap, and can be found at Watchismo for $145.

Tempo Tags Keep It Simple

By Evan Ackerman
Tempo Tags are tiny little clip-on watches. They tell time. And they’re small. Made out of stainless steel and powered by a replaceable watch battery, they’ll remain useful until people stop caring what time it is. For $18, you get two of them, one with a clip on the right side for you boring people, and one with a clip on the left side for us awesome people. Or, alternatively, $15 gets you versions that tell temperature. They’ve kinda got an anti-fancy thing going on that is pretty appealing, and you can find them over at Vessel.
