Epson adds tethering, remote shutter release to P-6000 and P-7000 photo viewers
Epson’s P-6000 ($599.99) and P-7000 ($799.99) Multimedia Viewers were always a bit too rich for our blood, but those hemming and hawing might just have the final bit of motivation they need to pull the trigger. A forthcoming firmware update for the 80GB and 160GB (respectively) photo viewers brings along a hotly-anticipated new feature: tethering. Put simply, pro shooters (and novices, we guess) can now connect select Nikon and Canon DSLRs to their photo viewer via USB, and in real time shots will be simultaneously captured to the camera’s memory card and the viewer’s hard drive. Moreover, the update includes a remote shutter release function for added convenience, though we’re sad to say that the retail pricing of these buggers hasn’t budged. If you’re a proud owner already, keep your eyes glued to Epson’s support site — the download should go live in “late-October.”

MMS for iPhone 2G and tethering on OS 3.1.2 explained, not for the faint of heart

Let’s be clear upfront that this isn’t for the casual iPhone jailbreaker, but if you feeling like living on the edge, you can give your original model an added boost of MMS capability, or any device with OS 3.1.2 the power to tether. Highlighted in a series of tweets today by iPhone dev team lead MuscleNerd, whiterat (for MMS) and two-bit (for tethering) will get the job done, but both require tinkering with the baseband, which is exponentially more advanced and brick-inducing than, say, installing Cydia. Venture forth with the instructions beyond the read links below.

How To Enable MMS on iPhone 2G, Tethering on OS 3.1.2 [IPhone]
What better way to kick off the week than with two questionably safe iPhone hacks, each of which scratches a particular nagging itch: the first being lack of MMS on 2G iPhones, and the second being tethering on OS 3.1.2.
The hacks are pretty hardcore, and demand not just a jailbroken iPhone, but a working knowledge of the handset’s operating system internals. Basically, I wouldn’t recommend anyone who enjoys having a not-bricked iPhone try either one. Anyway! The former comes by way of the Hackint0sh forums, courtesy of user Whiterat:
1. Backup original CommCenter (goes without saying…)
2. Replace CommCenter in: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/ with a patched one.
3. Chmod the new CommCenter to 755
4. Open /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/M68AP.plist and insert a true boolean value for “mms” under capabilities
and the latter, from the Dev Team Wiki, step-ified by The Beat Mix (the instructions are too long to include here; just check them out at the link).
If they’re soooooo dangerous, then why even mention them? Because in their respective forums, the chatter around the hacks is that they’ll make their way to the Cydia jailbreak app store before too long, and both be installable with little more than a tap. [MuscleNerd's Twitter via 9to5Mac]
