Sony Ericsson acknowledges touchscreen issues on Aino
As if the Aino’s odd name wasn’t handicap enough, Sony Ericsson’s taking another hit on its high-end Remote Play-capable full-touch (but Symbian-free) phone today with news that it’s got a dodgy touchscreen. It’s unclear exactly what’s wrong or how it’s ultimately going to get resolved, but several British retailers — most notably behemoth Carphone Warehouse — have elected to yank it from shelves until they’ve gotten confirmation that the mothership has fixed the problem. A company spokesman notes that “Aino has sold in limited numbers in the UK, so this issue affects only a very small number of customers,” which is a backhanded way of saying “for once, we’re incredibly lucky no one wants this thing” — though considering that the Satio’s on hold now, too, “lucky” might not be the right word for it. For what it’s worth, Sony’s US SonyStyle store is still hawking Ainos for $600, so part with that six-pack of Benjamins at your own risk.

New XPERIA X10 hands-on video brings the snappy
Sony Ericsson’s Android-based XPERIA X10 was mighty sluggish when we played with it at the launch a couple weeks ago, but this new video from hdblog.it shows what looks like a much newer software build that’s dramatically faster and more responsive. There’s nothing much new here in terms of features, but just the fact that the X10 is in the wild and running well is encouraging — especially since we’re really digging that media playback interface. Now all we need is some Stateside shipping details and we’ll be all set. Video after the break.
[Thanks, Nils]

Sony Ericsson looking ready to come clean with Android-powered Rachael on November 3
It could be argued that Sony Ericsson owes the world some love after it built up its last event only to introduce a single, solitary A2DP headset, but we might finally get what’s coming to us in just a few days’ time. It looks like November 3 is the date SE has chosen to unleash the first volley in its Android strategy on the world, likely the XPERIA X3 (or X10, or whatever the heck they decide to call it) with that wild Rachael UI that we’ve been tracking for a few months. How do we know? Well, it does line up with the latest and greatest rumors — but more importantly, digging into the event page’s HTML source reveals several mentions of Rachael by name, so… yeah, that’s pretty much a lock. Should the unannounced Dragon and Sholes / Droid both be shaking in their boots already?

United Nations Approves MicroUSB Universal Phone Charger Standard [MicroUsb]
The International Telecommunication Union, a branch of the UN, has decided on a standard for phone chargers that should finally cut down on a huge chunk of unnecessary e-waste. It’s about time.
It looks like the Universal Charging Solution (UCS) has some pretty broad support, from handset manufacturers like LG, Motorola and Samsung to carriers including AT&T and T-Mobile. No word on whether the standard will match the one the GSM Association has been working on, but they’re both rallying around MicroUSB, so we’ll call it likely for now.
What’s sad to me is that, according to the source, this standard could save 51,000 tons of waste if it were in place today. Considering all phone chargers do exactly the same thing, it’s pretty ridiculous there wasn’t a standard in place before.
Participating carriers and handset makers should fully adopt the UCS by 2012. Hopefully America hops on board before then. [Reuters via Electronista]
