Palm Pixi on sale November 15 exclusively at Sprint for $100 on contract

Just as we’d heard earlier this morning, today’s the day that Palm and Sprint come clean with their undercover plans for the former’s second-ever webOS device. The Pixi, which we toyed with back on our first Engadget Show, is slated to hit Sprint stores, Best Buy, RadioShack and select Walmart locations on November 15th for $99.99, but that’s after a $50 instant rebate and a $100 mail-in rebate that you’ll be waiting ages for. Nothing here is all that surprising — after all, we knew it’d be on shelves before the holiday season — but the $100 price point is downright depressing. The Palm Pre can be had right now for just $150 (also on contract), and beyond that, both webOS devices are being offered on the exact same network. Throw this thing on Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile, and you’ve got a whole new wave of Palm customers; as it stands, who’s really buying this with the Pre just $50 away?

Palm Launches Pixi on Sprint, Claims $250 is $100

palm-pixi-front-low-res

Palm’s little Pixi will be available to buy on November 15th, and only from Sprint, the carrier of Palm’s other WebOS device, the Pre, at a price of “$100”. The little phone, which comes with a smaller screen, slower processor and much less slidey-out keyboard, looks to be a sweet little pocket-phone for those who don’t need the power of the Pre, and as such it goes squarely against Apple’s $100 iPhone 3G, itself a cheaper, slower and less full-featured alternative to the 3GS.

But while the iPhone 3G will actually cost you $100 in the store, Sprint and Palm force you to endure not one, but two rebates to get to the magic price. The first is a $50 instant rebate, applied at the time of purchase. The second is a $100 mail-in rebate, the kind that sneaky companies hope you’ll never redeem. So the actual price at the register is $200, or twice the price of the 3G.

It’s such a shame. The Pre is loved by the press, but remains just another cellphone to the buying public. It could have been the spunky little underdog that forced Apple to up its game, but instead it looks destined to play the role that the Creative Zen played to the iPod: the loser.

Caption contest: Palm strikes a pose in Spain

There are three things in this crazy world that scare the living daylights out of us: poor battery life, scratched screens, and seven-foot tall she-bots wielding Pres like concealed weapons. This, it seems, was the nightmarish scenario facing Madrid as it launched Palm’s first webOS-based phone this week.

Chris: “I’m being treated well, but please, it’s imperative that you buy this phone as expediently as possible.”
Richard Lai: “My other toy is the Pre.”
Ross: “It says if we don’t do exactly as it commands, the Spiders from Mars will return and destroy us all.”
Darren: “Geordi La Forge and I are like this.”
Josh T.: “So far they have treated me well, but I fear that could change at any moment. If you comply with their demand for 300 pairs of leather pants, they say I will be released unharmed.”
Thomas: “Sir, I assure you, this is exactly how they do it in America.”

Verizon confirms: Palm Pre hitting Big Red “early next year”

Oftentimes a picture shouts a thousand words. Other times it belts out precisely a dozen. Straight from Verizon Wireless’ official Twitter account comes this, a confirmation that the Palm Pre we knew was coming to Big Red, well, is coming to Big Red. If you can hold off through the tempting holiday rush, you’ll find Palm’s first-ever webOS device on VZW “early next year.” Huzzah!

Verizon Officially Confirms They Will Have the Palm Pre “Early Next Year” [Verizon]

Looks like Verizon won’t be passing on the Palm Pre after all. The company tweeted this morning that the phone will be coming to the carrier “early next year.”

Finally, it’s looking like Verizon is going to get a decent phone selection. Between this and the Android Devices we could see any day now, it seems like Big Red is finally getting with the times. [Twitter via BGR]
