LED Wand + RFID Waves = Beautiful [RFID]

Sometimes it’s the unseen that’s the most terrifying. In the case of RFID we think there’s plenty to dread, but never actually looked at those scary, scary waves. Thankfully someone at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design did.

Jack Schulze and Timo Arnall made this stunning video by using a specially-made LED wand, long-exposure photography, some animation, and a metric ton of patience. I, on the other hand, will be using the next few moments, my eyes, and an ounce or two of amazement to appreciate the supposedly paranoia-inducing beauty of RFID. [PopSci]

LED Pocket Watch Will Have You Considering Monocles and Handlebar Mustaches [DIY]

Using his one of his Grandfather’s broken old pocket watches as a starting point, one modder [Paul Pounds] skilled in the ways of microelectronics replaced the face with a system of 133 hand soldered LEDs.

Starting from scratch, he designed a PCB complete with 133 (hand soldered) LEDs, room for a temperature controlled oscillator for real time clock capabilities, a LiPo battery, and a cell phone vibrator to provide a simulated “second hand tick” feeling. The whole watch is powered by a PIC 16F946.

You would think that improving on such a beautiful design would be difficult, but a second version is already in the works that will feature a “more compact, lower power TCXO, automatic NTP syncing, and a USB port for charging and reprogramming”. Check out Paul’s website for more information on how to build one yourself. [Project Page via Hack a Day via Geeky Gadgets]

Yet Another PSPGo Mod Blinds You With LEDs [Mods]

Seriously, what is wrong with the PSPGo? Is the handheld so ho-hum that people are purposefully modding it into awful things, or is it just a really hard device to work with?

This latest entry attempts to camouflage the portable as some kind of Christmas decoration. The buttons glow, lights flash, yada yada yada you paid a $250 premium and then put a bunch of holes in it.

Sorry for all the negativity. I guess I was just holding out hope that the “PSPGo Mod” Google Alert that popped up in my inbox today was the one where someone finally hacked this thing with better wifi so it could download a file in less than a hour. [Acid Mods - Thanks, Wouter]

Sony TRIMASTER quad-HD LCD multiplies the resolution, and the price, of any home HDTV

Can’t wait until December for Toshiba’s CELL REGZA LCD? Sony is bringing its own 56-inch 3,840×2160 quad-HD display to market November 1 in Japan. Priced at 6,825,000 ($76,583) including taxes this is clearly for pros only, hence the TRIMASTER name referring to the three elements combined within — exact color, accurate picture and reliability — thanks to a RGB LED backlit panel built with incredible picture reproduction and exact calibration (with included software via a connected PC) in mind. While it’s cheaper than JVC’s $175k 4K projector, unless you’re mastering the next Pixar flick, viewing high res satellite imagery or can’t live without four HD feeds on one screen even the most well heeled amongst may be better served scouring bargain bins for a used Westinghouse D56QX1 for now.

Lego R2-D2 Minifig Mod Adds Sound and Light [Lego]

Sorry Jason. You trumped my LED Lego stormtrooper minifig with your cylon and Iron Man, but this modded R2-D2 Lego minifig kills them all with lighting and actual Star Wars astromech sounds. [Brickmodder via FBTB via Brothers Brick]
