Disney develops sensory devices for films and games

Some movies may seem scary enough, but how much more intense would the fear be if you suddenly felt something brush past you?
Enhancing the intensity of films and games is something Disney researchers have been working on recently and they’ve created something that’s been dubbed a “tactile brush” in order to bring your senses into play more than ever before.
Kinect lets you play poker standing up

In this week’s installment of 101 ways to use your Kinect we have the motion gaming controller from Microsoft giving us the ability to play poker. The folks over at Poker Listings made use of the open-source Kinect software available out there, and with the use of some macros, configured the Kinect to recognize the gestures to play online poker. Folding, checking, placing a bet, and even raising can all be done with simple hand motions.
While admittedly it looks silly playing poker standing up, waving your hands like a mad man, it does make the game a lot healthier. After all, instead of sitting in front of the computer and clicking mouse buttons, you’re standing and actually using energy waving your arms all over the place. Last time I checked, it burns a lot more calories than clicking a mouse. If you’re keen on finding out how to set up your own Kinect for poker playing head over to Poker Listings’ website. Hit the break for a video demonstration of how it works:

DC Universe Online players get free game time and a Batman-inspired mask

Sony’s been facing some tough times recently, with their PSN (PlayStation Network) servers shut down for over a week, and yesterday it was their SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) servers that got turned off due to the discovery of another security breach. While they promised a free month of PSN Plus to their PSN subscribers, some people weren’t happy about it because even with the free month of PSN Plus, it didn’t change the fact that they lost valuable game time for MMOs like DC Universe Online.

Nintendo confirms next Wii coming in 2012, will preview it at E3
Nintendo has just announced it plans to introduce a successor to its Wii console next year, a “playable model” of which will be shown off at the E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles coming up on June 7th. No details are available as to how the next Wii will improve on the first one, though we imagine Nintendo will be happy if it simply matches the success of its current-gen home entertainer — the brief note publicizing the new roadmap also comes with a total of Wii sales accumulated between its launch in ‘06 and the end of last month: 86.01 million. That’s said to be on a “consolidated shipment basis,” so maybe Nintendo is mixing its definitions of sales and shipments the way Sony likes to, but it’s a mighty big number either way. Bring on E3, we say!

Pre-Order Your iCade Now

By Chris Scott Barr
Owning an arcade cabinet is one of those dreams that most every gamer has. Unfortunately there are some major hurdles involved with owning such a thing. First, if you want one with a good game (or multiple good games) you’re going to have to shell out a few hundred bucks. Then there’s the issue of space, and weight. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to move one, but arcade machines are really heavy. Well, if you already own an iPad, you can turn it into a miniature arcade cabinet.
That’s right, you can finally head over to ThinkGeek and pre-order your very own iCade. The April Fool’s gadget from last year is going to be shipping on May 11th. The price hasn’t changed from the earlier $100, so no worries about having to pay more. What’s even better is that Atari has already released their collection of 100 classic games, so there will be no shortage of games to play when yours arrives.
