Skin cancer-detecting laser tool now available
The word cancer often evokes a sense of dread in us, simply because it is one of those diseases that can be pretty hard to manage if it has developed into an advanced stage. Well, when it comes to skin cancers, one would most probably hope it isn’t melanoma by any means, since it is the deadliest. Out of 115,000 new cases of melanoma diagnosed in the US last year, nearly 8,700 resulted in death. Scientists at Duke University intend to reverse that trend with a new laser-based tool that was specially designed to identify malignant melanomas sooner, without having to go through the trials of a false diagnosis and unnecessary surgery. How does this work? For starters, this technique will require a couple of low-energy lasers to probe suspect moles, with the redistribution of energy being examined to identify microscopic areas of varying skin pigment. After highlighting higher levels of a skin pigment known as eumelanin in melanomas, it has proved to be quite reliable in positively identifying all eleven samples of melanoma in a particular study. Of course, the trial will need to continue via thousands of archived skin slices as tests before it can be made available mainstream.

$150 Android Tablet With Capacitive Touchscreen Display From Wopad

With the Galaxy Tab hitting the market, the stakes in the Android tablet market have been raised and manufacturers out there are recognizing this. Now the Wopad is one of the more modern Android-powered tablets and it’s priced at 999 Yuan ($150). One of the obvious features of this tablet is that it features a capacitive touchscreen display, offering you multi-touch input. It’s powered by a Rockchip RK2818 processor clocked at 600MHz and offers 256MB of RAM. It doesn’t look like it’ll challenge the Galaxy Tab or iPad anytime soon, but considering that it’s only $150, it’s not a bad option. Specifications of it include:

Wi-Fi only Samsung Galaxy Tab spotted in Best Buy ad

It should be common knowledge by now that the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be arriving Stateside this coming November, and here is a Best Buy ad that shows the company also wants a slice of the action, albeit offering the Wi-Fi only model for the Samsung tablet. Depending on the model you choose, prices start from $499 upwards with no involvement of any mail-in rebates. 3G service from Sprint and Verizon seems to be available either with a contract or via a month-to-month plan. We do wonder whether T-Mobile and AT&T variants will also be hitting the retail store as well, but with the release being less than 3 weeks away, your patience shouldn’t run out too fast by then.

Dell Looking Glass Android Tablet Caught On Video For Closer Inspection

Dell’s upcoming Looking Glass 7-inch tablet wasn’t pictured extensively when Michael Dell took it out, but a video of the event has since surfaced, giving us a slightly better look at this upcoming Android device. In terms of hardware, a volume rocker can be seen on the side of the device, along with a headphone jack, a PDMI connector port (similar to the Streak), and a switch (possibly for rotation lock or silent mode). You can check out the device’s appearance after 1:27 into the video clip after the jump.

Rumor of details on BlackBerry tablet

Ashok Kumar, an analyst who is under the employment of Rodman & Renshaw, has come up with a rumor concerning the rumored BlackBerry tablet. It seems that the 1GHz processor will come from Marvell, where it will come with a 7″ display as well as two cameras, taking the now-traditional route of having one in front for video calls as well as another behind to snap really good photos. Such hardware might be superior to the iPad, but do bear in mind this is just part of the equation as value is in the software. There is a possibility of this being part of the corporate environment though, which might serve RIM’s (the guys behind BlackBerry) interests best. Should Marvell’s Armada 610 be the 1GHz processor under the hood, it would be able to feature boast full HD 1080p video playback as well as handle advanced 3D graphics with aplomb.
