LG Triptych concept phone should have 3 faces ideally

Strange to see a concept device not living up to its namesake – we’re talking about the LG Triptych, which denotes the number 3, although it has just two faces. Still, this is one convergence device that would attract the attention of many since it lets you carry both a phone and a tablet in a single form factor – especially when you can open it up to have both displays synchronize to end up as a tablet, albeit with a potentially distracting bezel in the middle. Who are we to say that such a crazy idea won’t happen in the future, but from the form factor itself, we’re guessing they’ve also figured out potential battery woes involved in something so small and yet having so many power guzzling parts.

Multiple OS’s on a Smartphone

The Smartphone market is definitely going to be more competitive in 2011 with five platforms competing for the crown, but designers Michal Bonikowski and Rafal Pilat feel there’s no need to choose just one so they’ve come up with three concepts sure to appease most of you. Project one is an HTC model that can run multiple operating system (not gonna happen) but an intriguing idea nonetheless. I’d actually go for a phone like that. Projects 2 and 3 are more standard fare. Hit the jump

Project 1. Dual or Triple OS? Why not?
Here’s a take on a platform that would be perfect for running different operating systems. The concept sports an extra touch display situated under the main screen. This extra screen could be used either to display notifications of be used for specific OS buttons (e.g. home, search etc.).

Project 2. A Windows Phone 7 concept
Smooth curvy lines, contrasting yet complementary materials used for different body parts. Satin aluminium shell + painted aluminium for the back covers. Firm grip, large 4” screen.

Project 3. A Windows Phone 7 Nokia
There’s nothing better than a feeling of holding something “real” and not another plastic toy – which unfortunately  is all too common. The case is made of magnesium alloy.

Concept Traffic-Light is an Hourglass for Traffic

Sand Glass is a concept traffic-light which gives visual feedback as to just how long you’re going to be stuck at a junction. Using the hourglass as a metaphor, Sand Glass lets its LED-pixels bleed through the lamp’s waist one by one, so you can see just when the lights will change.

It’s great, and if deployed would be diverting enough (for the first few weeks at least) to ease some of the boredom of waiting at the lights. I think the design is a little over-cautious, though, and could be simplified even further.

First, adding numbers seems redundant. Why bother with the whole hourglass schtick if you’re just going to put a countdown up there too? The flowing virtual-sand is plenty clear already, and allows for adjustment of the time remaining, something hard to do inconspicuously with numbers.

The Sand Glass could also remove the amber light altogether. The amber lamp is a throwback to times when both lights at a crossroads would be controlled by the same switch: flipping both lights simultaneously would be dangerous, so the amber light provided a buffer in both directions. With the clear visual timing-signals in the Sand Glass, amber could finally be retired.

I love this concept, especially as it could presumably be made for the same cost as any other LED traffic-light. It might even stop me jumping the lights on my bike.

Concept: Pastillero Watch Reminds You When To Take Your Pills

Concept: Pastillero Watch Reminds You When To Take Your Pills

It’s easy to forget to take our medicine and keep track of what we’ve taken, especially since most of us lead busy lifestyles. A concept watch dubbed the Pastillero (Pill) offers a modern solution to an age old problem. The watch is designed to keep track of the pills that you’re taking and when it’s time to give yourself another dose, the watch will vibrate strongly, showing the name of the pill that you’re supposed to take, ensuring that you’ll be able to follow the doctor’s orders.
