Best Of Machine And Digital

The Mechanized Digital Watch features a digital font but manipulates it to function as a “mechanized” number because the elements of each digit physically move to create numbers. Every digit is composed of 7 panels and to create a number, panels on the watch face recess revealing contrasting sidewalls. Thus creating the outline of a digit and a whole lot of fun!

Concept USB Cable Features Built-in Mini Hub

infinite_usb

By Chris Scott Barr

When a person starts to run low on USB ports, usually the first thing they get is a hub of some sort. However, instead of adding three extra ports, why not just have one of your cables add a single port. Think of these as similar to a strand of Christmas lights. The ones that had an extra plug-in on top of the one you put into the wall.

These concept cables actually don’t sound like too bad of an idea. Unfortunately they’ll likely only work if you’re using a device which has a standard USB (mini, or micro as well) plug on the other end. I bet if they made an iPod/iPhone charging cable with that extra port, they’d make a fortune. No word on whether or not this concept will make it to store shelves.

This Bathroom Concept Is Probably A Transformer In Disguise [Design]

The Roca Active & Relax has floor-to-ceiling “mirror-screen LCD plates” that act as either windows, monitors, or mirrors, a floor that moves at the command of your voice to convert the bath into a fitness facility, and hidden features galore.

Designed by Michal Mitek, this concept bathroom design is intended to make the most of a space by hiding several features in each aspect of its design. From the LCDs that can either give a beautiful panoramic view or double as computer monitors to the rising floor that covers the tub to turn the area into a fitness floor, everything is smoothly integrated.

I’d love a bathroom like the Roca, but I’ll be damned if I can figure out where the soap holder is. [Yanko Design]

LAb[au]’s f5×5x5 framework sculpture mesmerizes on video

It’s been nearly three full years since we’ve seen anything hot and fresh from LAb[au], but thankfully, said drought is decidedly over. By using a combination of aluminum, Plexiglas, LED lights, determination, wit, stepper motors, critical thinking and IR tracking technologies, the f5×5x5 sculpture was created. Dubbed a “kinetic and luminous framework,” the installation is part of a larger ‘16n’ project designed to confront architectural problems (like congestion and flows) with spatial sensing technologies. We know, that’s all pretty deep — but if you’re just lookin’ for a good time, we’d recommend heading past the break, mashing play and dropping your kudos in comments.

Shape-shifting ‘Breathing Chair’ looks to make the beanbag fashionable

Shape-shifting chairs may not always be the most attractive additions to your living room, but Taiwanese designer Yu-Ying Wu is hoping to change that with her so-called “Breathing Chair,” which has already won a few prestigious design awards but hasn’t yet snagged any commercial partners. The secret, such as it is, is the array of “professionally calculated” holes spaced out through the three layers of foam plastic, which are designed to compress into the shape of an armchair when someone sits in it and spring back into a cube when they stand up. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any video of it in action, but the chair will soon be on display at Red Dot Design Museum in Signapore if you happen to be in the area.
