NudgeMail: Email might become the best reminder of all

NudgeMail: Email might become the best reminder of all

Thanks to modern technology, I don’t have to remember a bunch of things such as web addresses (Xmarks), meetings (Outlook), and people’s faces (Facebook). That frees brain cycles for much more important activities, like video games. However, I’ve never been able to find a good way to remind me about things. That’s mainly because most “reminders” simply take too much time to setup. I don’t want to create a calendar “event” to remind me to do something (yet, I do it), and I always end up not checking the “todo” apps.

NudgeMail takes a different route and uses a one-two punch approach that might infuse a new level of productivity in your world. First, it lets you easily setup a reminder on every single computing platform that can send an email. It uses a very simple syntax that is easy to remember: just send an email to “tomorrow@nudgemail.com” with something in the subject+body, and Nudgemail will send you a reminder… tomorrow. You can also use all kinds of commands like “Tuesday”, “Dec25?, “3 hours”, “eod” or “snooze. These are just a few examples, check the Nudgemail commands.

Using email as a reminder system is a double-edged sword: on one hand, it’s beautifully simple, works with everything that sends emails, and if you’re like me, Email gets more airtime than the Calendar. Creating an email reminder is also much less “work” than creating a calendar event – this is really important: do not underestimate how lazy one can be. On the other hand, if you get a constant stream of email, the reminder might just be another “blip” on your radar. At the moment, the service is in free beta, but eventually they’ll charge for some features. There are others too: FollowUpThen and FollowUp.

Samsung Begins To Mass Produce 40nm-class 8GB DDR3 Memory For Notebooks

Samsung Begins To Mass Produce 40nm-class 8GB DDR3 Memory For Notebooks

Memory junkies out there should be happy to hear that Samsung has begun to mass produce 8GB DDR3 SODIMM memory modules for notebooks and mobile workstations. The modules will be using new technology that claims an 8GB DDR3 module offers 53 percent power savings over two 4GB DDR3 modules, and a 67 percent power saving compared to 1.8V DDR2 modules. The retail pricing has yet to be announced, but the modules will be available soon as an option in Dell’s Precision M6500 mobile workstation, and hopefully mass production will bring the price of 8GB memory modules down.

Lenovo Ideacentre Q150 ships Stateside

Lenovo Ideacentre Q150 ships Stateside

The Lenovo Ideacentre Q150 has started to ship in the US, although there was no official announcement on Lenovo’s part which goes to show just how low key the entire affair is. You will be able to opt from a 160GB hard drive model which is going for $220, while the 250GB hard drive option will see the price rise by another $130. This nettop will sport a wireless keyboard and mouse for added convenience if you decide to use it in your living room while seated in your favorite lounge chair, although the Q150 will lack an internal optical drive, IR receiver or remote control. Other specifications include a dual core Atom D510 1.66GHz processor, up to 2GB RAM, NVIDIA’s ION graphics chipset, 5.1-channel audio (making this suitable for a half-decent HTPC), Wi-Fi N connectivity, HDMI output and a VESA wall mount for more flexible installation options within the home. Sounds like a pretty affordable option by any means for a device of its class.

Chrome OS To Get Chromoting Remote Desktop Feature?

Chrome OS To Get Chromoting Remote Desktop Feature?

Details are still very sketchy at the moment, but word is that Google’s Chrome OS will be offering some form of remote desktop feature, dubbed Chromoting, allowing users to access legacy PC applications right within the browser. This would go some way to addressing the issues folks would have with moving to a new platform, especially if they have Windows-specific programs that are essential for their work. Of course, there are web services that have been offering such features for some time now, including LogMeIn, and GoToMyPC. Will such a feature encourage you to accept Google’s Chrome OS when it’s launched, or are you still skeptical about what the OS is capable of?

Microsoft Preparing Service Pack 1 For Windows 7 And Windows Server 2008 R2

Microsoft has started to talk about Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Despite Microsoft not officially announcing a beta or date of release for the service pack, word is going around that SP1 might be arriving as early as this month. Windows Server 2008 R2 will be getting some rather cool features for Microsoft’s desktop virtualization platform, namely Microsoft Dynamic Memory and Microsoft RemoteFX. Windows 7 will be getting the usual bunch of hotfixes, as well as an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of the newly-introduced RemoteFX on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

More information over at Microsoft’s official announcement.
