Litl Easel ‘web computer’ is cute as a baby-blue button
Sorry Litl, but the FCC just spoiled your surprise party. Described as “a web computer” running Litl OS (sorry Microsoft), the 3.38-pound Litl Easel (built by FIC) packs a 1.86GHz Atom Z540 processor beneath that 12.1-inch 1280×800 pixel display, a meager 2GB of storage, 1GB of DDR2 memory, 802.11b/g WiFi, and webcam all powered by a 2600MAh battery. There’s also HDMI, a single USB jack, and an IR receiver for a Litl remote. A dedicated baby-blue “Litl” key on the keyboard would appear to act like a home key that takes you back to the “Card View” home page. Based on the description from the manual, the Litl OS will present information in stacks of cards: blue cards are “permanent” cards for the card catalog, family and friends, and settings; white cards are web cards displayed in a Mozilla browser; and black “channel” cards (known as widgets everywhere else) feature a Litl alarm clock, New York Times headline ticker, and weather channel. And if the cutsie-wutsie factor of the Litl Easel is lost on you then perhaps the “best results if plugged in” label on the power brick will help drive the message home. Litl already has a teaser page up so we expect this to launch Stateside sometime before the holidays.

Next-gen Atom N470 to relax netbook spec restrictions slightly further
Netbook specs have been held in check by Microsoft and Intel’s dizzying array of rules and restrictions for low-cost machines, but now that Windows 7 is out and Intel’s getting ready to release the next generation of Atom chips it sounds like things are about to get slightly better. Microsoft has already started allowing netbook manufacturers to load Windows 7 Home Premium on machines without restrictions, and now Fudzilla says Intel will lift the 1GB RAM limit from Atom machines when the 1.83GHz N470 Pine Trail chip hits in March. That means we’ll start to see more of a range of netbook specs going forward, but the low-end will probably still be dominated by Windows 7 Starter and the Atom N450, which will still be limited to 1GB of RAM, so don’t expect to be happy with the cheap stuff anytime soon.

Onkyo’s tiny ION-based P3 nettop has an even tinier removable DVD-ROM
If you’re concerned about the future obsolescence of your miniscule Atom-based nettop, chances are its choice of optical storage is not what’s bothering you. But, if that’s what keeps you up at nights, Onkyo’s P3 is your Ambien. Its ION platform sports the usual 1.6GHz Atom 230 proc, 2GB of memory, and 160GB hard drive. The DVD-ROM is a separate module that clips into a groove on the side and, while details are slim, that doesn’t look like a standard form-factor to us, so if a Blu-ray upgrade or the like ever surfaces don’t expect it to be cheap. The P3 itself (pictured again below with an LCD friend) isn’t exactly a bargain to start, with an estimated MSRP of ¥69,800 (about $770) when it ships in March of next year. That’s the price you pay for modular design.

Verizon prepping HP Mini 311, Mini 110 for launch

Wait, hold up — before you sprint down to your Verizon store (sprint… Verizon… never mind) to pick up that catchily-named Gateway LT2016u that just launched, you might want to mull over the next batch of netbooks primed to hit the carrier’s outlets in the coming days. Subsidized netbooks still haven’t proven themselves as viable products — at least, so long as they’re not subsidized down to $0 — but Verizon’s ready to keep on trying with the launch of a global 3G-equipped HP Mini 311 on October 22. Sickeningly, they want a full $249.99 on contract after $100 mail-in rebate — but in exchange, you’ll be getting ION, Windows 7, 1366 x 768 resolution on a 11.6-inch display, and a 1.6GHz Atom N270. Moving on, the carrier’s current Mini 1151 will ride off into the sunset and be replaced by a Windows XP-equipped Mini 110 featuring a 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM; it’ll launch once 1151 stock is depleted for $199.99 after rebate with a new two-year deal. Follow the break for details and specs on the 110 (spoiler: it’s like pretty much every other 110, but with more voodoo subsidy math).

Rumor: Intel Atom N450 (Pine Trail) to launch on January 3rd?
![pinetrail[1] pinetrail[1]](http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/pinetrail1.jpg)
Fudzilla is reporting that Intel’s new Atom N450 chipset – codenamed Pine Trail (see previous coverage here) — will officially launch on January 3rd.
Previous reports suggested that the chipset will be made available to manufacturers sometime this month, to which I speculated that we’d see Pine Trail-equipped netbooks around the holidays. If Fudzilla’s report is true, though — and the site makes no reference to any sources, so take the information with a grain of salt — then it appears these new netbooks would make an appearance just in time for CES.
Whatever the case, the 1.66GHz CPU will apparently sell for around $64, which is $20 more expensive than current N270 package. The Pine Trail platform shifts the system from a 3-chip architecture down to a 2-chip architecture in order to save physical space and, theoretically, reduces power consumption and improves performance.
